Blood Maiden

Blood Maidens (血式少女, Chishiki Shōjo) are special individuals, usually female, who are born with the ability to combat Marchens. Blood Maidens are born from a pregnant human who is then turned into a Marchen. Due to the Jail's Mimicry, the child usually ends up bearing similarities to characters from things like fairy tales or other popular media. Most Blood Maidens are born already knowing their names.

In terms of abilities, the Blood Maidens are the only individuals who are capable of fighting against the Marchens and Nightmares, as they possess exceptional physical prowess and unique abilities.

Blood Youths are variants of Blood Maiden capable of purging "Corruption" by spraying a Blood Maiden with their blood. Blood Youths however, lack any sort of combat ability.

While all known Blood Maidens are female, it is not known whether a male is capable of being born with the same abilities of a Blood Maiden.

Characteristics[]

Blood Maidens are born with inherent combat ability and knowledge. Even Blood Maidens who haven't been trained in combat are able to immediately fight upon picking up any sort of weapon. A Blood Maiden's eyes turn pink if they get Marchen Blood on themselves, this is usually used to identify a person as being a Blood Maiden.

Through prolonged exposure to Marchen Blood, a Blood Maiden may enter a powered up state known as "Massacre Mode". Massacre Mode turns a Blood Maiden's eyes pink, and their hair white. They may also gain certain additional body features, and they also receive a large boost in their combat ability.

If a Blood Maiden is exposed to Marchen blood for an extended period of time, and if they are under heavy mental distress (this is referred to as having high Corruption), they may enter another powered up state known as "Blood Skelter". Blood Skelter is a powered up state similar to Massacre Mode, but with a greater increase of power as well as a Blood Maiden's loss of reason. In Blood Skelter, it is generally impossible to reason with a Blood Maiden, and they may end up attacking allies as well as enemies. Blood Skelter is defined by a Blood Maiden's general lack of clothing, a certain pattern may appear on their body and they may gain additional features such as becoming merged with their Blood Weapon.

Blood Maidens also have something known as "Blood Libido", a unique personality trait that usually stems from some aspect of the original story the Blood Maiden is based off, such as Thumbelina's liking of small enclosed spaces. Often times, a Blood Maiden's Blood Libido may present problems for them in social situations in cases such as Red Riding Hood who feels intense anxiety if she does not have her hood or some other kind of head covering.
