“ | How sloppy. Here, drink this potion I made. You'll be able to move at double the pace. | ” |
—Gretel |
Gretel is a Blood Maiden and one of the playable characters in the Mary Skelter series.
Profile[]
A young girl who’s curious and inquisitive, but what doesn’t interest her is met with a lack of emotion. She has a habit of speaking without moral views.
She seems to hold an interest towards Jack, viewing him as a good-natured person. Because she lacks common sense, she says things which make even the Blood Maidens cringe, but she seems fine with that, and may even enjoy their reactions.
Story[]
Mary Skelter: Nightmares[]
“ | A girl who lived in the Dorm with the Nightmare, Hansel. Naturally curious, though sometimes amoral. Jack's kind nature excites her. | ” |
—In-Game Profile |
Chapter 5/6[]
Michiru and Chiaki approach the Dawn with concerns of two rumors, with one being that a girl is living alongside a Nightmare in the Dorm. Shocked, the group agree to investigate.
They arrive at the Dorm and explore for a bit before they meet Gretel. She doesn't respond to their questioning at first, satisfied with simply watching them from afar. Before long, the group calls out to her. She is not initially aggressive but is insistent that they need to leave. They soon ask her who she is to which she nonchalantly replies that she is a Nightmare, just like her brother Hansel. Shocked, the situation begins to escalate and before Jack can call everyone down, Gretel sends Hansel after the group and disappears. After running away from Hansel, they speculate on how she can maneuver so easily in the dungeon before coming to the conclusion that she has some kind of ability to teleport.
After some more exploring, the group begins to approach the core. However, before they are able to do so, Gretel appears and warps Jack and herself away. She explains that she was curious about Jack because he was so unwilling to fight and asks about his plans in the Dorm. When he expresses that the group must destroy the core, Gretel is obviously displeased but is willing to let them do so. Jack suggests getting Gretel to calm Hansel down so they don't have to fight, but she refuses, stating that Hansel is willing to die for their home. Having come to the conclusion of their conversation, Gretel instructs Jack on how to return to the group before disappearing once again.
After they destroy the core, the group face-off against Hansel. Gretel also appears, but Hansel refuses to let her fight and she allows the encounter. After they fight and defeat Hansel, some of his blood splatters onto her, revealing her as a Blood Maiden. Before anything else happens, Jack shoots her with the Mary Gun in order to stop any kind of reaction. His reaction stopped Gretel from going into Blood Skelter, as she states that she felt a surge of emotion that she had never felt before. Having her home turned upside down and her brother dead, she chooses to honor her brother's final wish for her to see the world and joins with the Blood Maidens.
After she arrives at the Dawn, Jack decides to check on her in her room. While the conversation is initially dry, Gretel teleports them to the outskirts of the Liberated District to discuss her suspicions about the Dawn. They discuss why there are no eyes in the Dorm, coming to the conclusion that since no Dawn expedition to the Dorm was successful, they were never able to plant them. Additionally, Gretel notes how strange it is that Hansel called himself a Nightmare. Confused, Jack asks why that is suspicious before she explains that the Dawn couldn't have known what Nightmares called themselves unless they could communicate with them beforehand. Gretel teleports them back to her room after their conversation, with both deciding to keep an eye out for information.
If Gretel is recruited before Rapunzel, she is present for the revelation that Blood Maidens and Blood Youths are hybrids born from Marchens. This doesn't get a reaction from her, having already known and assuming everyone else knew as well.
Chapter 7[]
The group make their way through the Station Grounds and fight the S.G. Nightmare. Before its killed, Gretel stops the group and interrogates the Nightmare about who controls the Jail and who it is reporting to. Before it can answer her, Snark stabs it from behind, killing it. Despite his sudden appearance, Gretel stands before him unnerved and concludes that Snark must be weak because he had to strike the Nightmare from behind after he leaves.
Mary Skelter 2[]
“ | A girl that lived in the Dorms area with her Nightmare brother, Hansel. She is very nonchalant in things which do not interest her, and often says things that are considered societally wrong. She is sometimes found staring at Otsuu and Little Mermaid with great interest. | ” |
—In-Game Profile |
Chapter 3[]
Mary Skelter: Finale[]
“ | Equal parts blunt and intellectual, Gretel is an inquisitive scientist who is unafraid to pique her curiosity by any means, however brutal her methods may be. Thanks to Jack, she has begun to consider more humane methods, but her willingness to experiment is an ever-present temptation. She often pokes fun at Hameln. In the aftermath of Massacre Pink's ambush, she suffers heavy wounds... | ” |
—In-Game Profile |
During the attack from Massacre Pink, Gretel somehow got seriously injured. Despite this, she can still manage to tease Hameln. She joins Clara's group along with Hameln, Sukui, and Kaede.
Relationships[]
Nightmares[]
- Hansel: Hansel is her brother and the protector of their home in the Dorm area. While she's not overly expressive of their relationship, she does feel genuinely sad at his death, to the point where she nearly goes into Blood Skelter.
- Jack: Jack is an unusually kind individual. This interests Gretel as he was even reluctant to fight Hansel with the revelation of their relationship and Hansel's intelligence. He also makes a good test subject whenever she has a potion or experiment.
- Alice: While Gretel sees Alice as a comrade in "perceiving the world with logic" as opposed to the rest of Blood Team's "emotion-based thinking", the two often get into arguments, particularly when Gretel's values clash with societal common sense.
- Rapunzel: Rapunzel is often seen with some manner of food, but Gretel always seems to follow whenever the former has sweets of any kind. Gretel has a habit of staring at Rapunzel to coerce her into forking over sweets.
Mary Skelter 2[]
- Hansel: Compared to Nightmares, Hansel and Gretel have more of a subordinate-to-master relationship than actual sibling bonds. This is to the point where she does not overtly mourn Hansel's death here, as she feels his death had meaning compared to most deaths one gets in the Jail.
- Jack: Jack is an interesting specimen, as Nightmares who possess and actually make use of their intellect and speech seem to be rare. Gretel wishes to do all sorts of experiments on Jack, to the point where she assaults him in her underwear to test if Nightmares have a libido.

Trivia[]
- Gretel is named after the female titular character in the German fairy tale, Hansel and Gretel.
- Her Blood Ability is in reference to the trail of breadcrumbs the siblings use to find their way home through the woods (though it's pecked at by birds soon after)
- Gretel's Death End Attire is based on Sumika Tokiwa, a supporting character in Death end re;Quest.
- Gretel's birthday is the 22nd of June.
- Gretel's event in Mary Skelter 2, where she attempts to seduce Nightmare Jack, was erroneously used as a supporting example in Mary Skelter: Finale's Refused Classification report for the Australian Classification Board.[1]
- While this event does not occur in-game in Finale (against the report's claims), the entirety of Mary Skelter 2's CG gallery - which contains Gretel's aforementioned event - was included in the former title's Before Story compilation feature.
