The Nightmare? (ナイトメア?, Naitomea?) is one of many Nightmares that patrols the Jail. It can be found in the Underground Cavern and chased into the Metropolitan Office.

Story[]

Mary Skelter: Nightmares[]

Extra Story[]

As the party explores the newly unlocked Underground Cavern, they come across the Nightmare? after destroying its core. Once its body parts have been broken, it runs away instead of fighting, much to the surprise of the party. They chase after it and defeat it, but suspect that something was off about the fight. Spotting something up ahead, they move forward into the Metropolitan Office.

Unbeknownst to the group, the Nightmare? that they had defeated was actually a copy left from the real Nightmare?, who had fled into the Metropolitan Office. The group starts to chase and surround it, reflecting Otsuu's dreams of the incident. It begs for them to stop and Jack makes them so that it can speak. The Nightmare? asks about the whereabouts of someone named Little Mermaid, to which everyone replies they have no idea, except for Red Riding Hood, who explains that she had to kill her when Little Mermaid entered Blood Skelter. Distraught at the news, the Nightmare? runs away, leaving behind a microphone with a recording of Little Mermaid singing from Mary Skelter 2. This causes Jack to remember everything from the previous timeline and frantically chase after the Nightmare?, who Jack has figured out is Otsuu.

They fight her inside and outside of her mech. If she is presented with all the Memoire items gathered throughout the game once outside of her mech, the fight will end and she will remember everything. If not, she will leave the fight upon defeat and reach the Witchcraft Core, resetting everything again.

Trivia[]

  • The original Nightmare is made to resemble the townspeople of Hamelin from the Pied Piper tale, from which Hameln is based off. The Nightmare would spawn far away from the player so it would only be heard and not seen except for in story moments, reflecting the lazy nature of the townspeople of Hamelin; however, the remake's maps are far more compact, so this nature is mostly lost. Additionally, the figure inside the mech appears to be playing a flute, similar to the Pied Piper himself.
  • However, Otsuu's introduction changes this meaning, as she was weak in her true form and hid inside the armor. After breaking out of it in the Metropolitan Office, her form has more bamboo-theming, with her bamboo-like arms, torso, and tail with leafy green hair. The starry portions of her body are segmented like bamboo as well, heavily leaning in the tale of the Crane's Return of a Favor.
